MONDAY 20 January

International law firm Simmons & Simmons has developed a cutting-edge AI-driven tool which predicts the outcome of EU trademark conflicts to 93% accuracy. WTR gave the service a test drive and got the scoop on its development and planned rollout. Read more here.

Question marks have arisen over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s use of ‘Sussex Royal’. Talking to WTR, trademark experts claimed that, when it comes to obtaining registered trademark protection, their position appears to be strong. Read more here.

WEDNESDAY 22 January

Amazon has retained the title of ‘the world’s most valuable brand’, with its brand valued at over $200 billion in the latest Brand Finance Global 500 report. This latest brand valuation report is not good news for all though, with a slowdown suggesting that troubled times could lie ahead. Read more here.

Acritas has released its annual index of the world's strongest law firm brands. Once again, the top 20 list includes a number of firms with strong trademark practices, many of which feature in the WTR 1000. We delved into the data. Read more here.

The CEO of Lockheed Martin, Marillyn Hewson, has been named the ‘world’s best brand guardian’ in a new rankings report. However, she is one of just four women in the top 100 ranking, highlighting a stark gender disparity at the highest levels of company management. Read more here.

THURSDAY 23 January

Alibaba has released data from its latest Intellectual Property Protection Report, revealing that it has supplied 1,045 IP-related leads to law enforcement authorities in the past 12 months. We provided the highlights from the report. Read more here.

We broke the news that a trademark application filed by The Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the brand name Sussex Royal has received a notice of threatened opposition. Read more here.  

A new study has revealed that a third of UK and European businesses remain uncertain of what their trademark registration strategy will be after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. Read more here.

Scam adverts on YouTube are using popular brand names to lure viewers to download potentially malicious phone apps. The fraudulent activity is being viewed by hundreds of thousands of people and is a difficult issue for brand owners to enforce or monitor. Read more here.
