Register.com under fire

Tucows, the leading domain name registrar, has sent a formal letter of complaint to Verisign alleging that Register.com improperly resists and deflects attempts by registrants to move their domain names to other domain name registrars.

Tucows's complaint includes an allegedly typical response that Register.com sends to a domain name registrant when it requests that its domain name be transfered to another registrar. The response that is sent is not only heavy on touting the attributes of Register.com, it also buries the link needed to confirm the transaction. In addition, the link is so long that many will have difficulty pasting it into their browser.

Tucows is requesting that Verisign enforce the rules of the registrar agreement on facilitating domain name transfers. Tucows is also requesting that if Registrar.com fails to comply, its licence be revoked.
