Premium domain names released

Nigeria
On April 20 2010 the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) announced the release of third-level '.com.ng' premium domain names.

The list of premium domain names consists primarily of generic words. NIRA aims to "quickly populate the '.ng' registry and to make it affordable".

NIRA has classified premium domain names into the following two categories:
  • Category A - registered domain names; and
  • Category B - non-registered domain names.
Each of these categories has been further classified into the following sub-categories:
  • A1 - names that are a corporate identity or trademark duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria, and were on the list of registered '.ng' third-level domains prior to the re-delegation of the '.ng' registry to NIRA;
  • A2 - names that are single words or compound words duly registered as third-level domains in the '.ng' registry prior to the re-delegation of the '.ng' registry.
  • B1 - names that are a corporate identity or trademark, but not registered as third-level domain in the '.ng' registry prior to the re-delegation of '.ng' registry; and
  • B2 - names that are single words or compound words not registered as third-level domains in the '.ng' registry prior to the re-delegation of the '.ng' registry.
All premium third-level domain names are to be sold by auction. NIRA has indicated that the cost for domain names in sub-categories A1 and A2 are fixed in accordance with the pricing for the list of third-level premium domain names.

Premium domain names that are not yet registered, and thus fall within the sub-categories B1 and B2, are available to owners of the relevant corporate identity or trademark. Applicants which meet this requirement are being given 'first offer of refusal' in sub-category B1. The 'buy now' price for any domain name in sub-categories B1 and B2 is N500,000 (approximately €2,700).
