MYNIC considers reintroducing '.my' 2LDs
The Malaysian Network Information Centre (MYNIC), the manager of the '.my' domain space, is considering reintroducing second-level domain names (2LDs). It closed on June 24 a one-month consultation period on its proposal to re-open registration for such domain names.
MYNIC used to register 2LDs in the early days of the '.my' domain. However, in the late 1990s the trend was towards categorizing domain names into activity segments such as commercial, governmental or educational. Consequently, MYNIC opened registration to the corresponding third-level domain names (3LDs) under, for instance, '.com.my', '.gov.my' and '.edu.my', and (ii) closed registrations for 2LDs.
The tentative plan is for the 2LDs to be re-launched in two phases. The first phase will be a two-month pre-registration period that would allow existing holders of 3LDs to register the equivalent 2LDs. In the second phase, 2LD registrations will be open to all Malaysian organizations and individuals.
