‘.co.nl’ extension launched

Netherlands

EuroDNS, the Luxembourg-based registrar responsible for the Dutch ‘.co.nl’ domain name space, has announced the launch of ‘.co.nl’ through a sunrise period divided into two phases.

Registrations will occur as third-level registrations under the domain name ‘.co.nl’, which is registered with EuroDNS. Therefore, the ‘.co.nl’ domain name space is not affiliated with SIDN, the registry for the ‘.nl’ country-code top-level domain.

The first phase of the sunrise period for ‘.co.nl’ domain names is launched today, November 18 2008. During this period, owners of a ‘.nl’ domain name have the right to register the equivalent of that domain name under ‘.co.nl’ with priority. Applications will be reviewed by an independent verification agent that is yet to be announced.

The second phase of the sunrise period will be launched in January 2009. During this phase, trademark owners will be able to apply for a priority registration. Domain names not registered during the first phase can also be claimed by trademark owners during the second phase. Multiple eligible applications of the same ‘.co.nl’ name received during the second phase of the sunrise period will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

As an alternative to normal court procedures, an alternative dispute resolution policy will be implemented for the resolution of disputes involving ‘.co.nl’ domain names. The alternative dispute resolution procedure will be run by the Czech Arbitration Court. Cases can be filed through their advanced online platform and decisions concerning ‘.co.nl’ domain name disputes will be based on rules similar to those applicable to ‘.eu’ domain names.
