Anti-piracy and counterfeiting working group established

On June 12 2009 Slovenia established an inter-sectoral working group for the fight against piracy and counterfeiting. The aim is to promote greater cooperation between the various state authorities that are involved in the enforcement of IP rights.
According to the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), the main tasks of the group are to:
- raise the level of protection of intellectual property and reduce piracy;
- coordinate the activities of the customs authorities, market inspectors, the police, the courts, the chambers of commerce and industry, the Chamber of Crafts, the Association of Patent and Trademark Agents and SIPO;
- analyze and amend the Industrial Property Act;
- set up a common database; and
- raise awareness among the public and IP rights holders.
These tasks were also included in the National Action Plan for Cooperation between SIPO and the European Patent Office.
The newly established group consists of representatives of:
- the Office of the State Prosecutor General;
- the General Police Directorate;
- the General Customs Directorate;
- the Market Inspectorate;
- the Ministry of Economy; and
- SIPO.
The group is presided over by the director of SIPO, who performs all administrative tasks for the group.
