Managing finite filing budgets; the looming brand value crisis; Intel on diversity: new edition of WTR is now live

The Spring 2020 edition of WTR is now available online to subscribers, offering the latest litigation tips, insight into IP office innovation, wellbeing considerations, and much more.

This issue we present the findings of our annual Global Trademark Benchmarking Survey, which takes the pulse of the IP industry and aims to identify how practice, strategies and threats are evolving over time. This year’s survey was conducted before the covid-19 emergency escalated and resulted in unprecedented levels of home working and disruption all around the world. However, even before the coronavirus crisis, one finding was that, while more than a third of corporate respondents reported an increase in their budgets over the past year, for most the situation – and outlook – was one of a financial freeze at best. The impact of the covid-19 pandemic will likely result in an even more pressured situation.

At a time when budgets are finite, creating a resilient, quantifiable methodology on which to base strategic filing decisions is key. Such an approach is outlined in this issue and will likely be even more critical going forward. Drawing on over 20 years’ experience assessing the value of intangible assets worldwide, the Brand Finance Global 500 2020 also warns that slow growth and an international crisis could see brand owners on the brink of a global crash – putting teams under even greater pressure to do more with less.

Elsewhere, we present the annual edition of our exclusive research project identifying the most innovative IP offices in the world. This year, we have a new number one office and our assessment of the non-core tools and services offered by 50 institutions found significant improvements – although gaps remain.

In addition, the issue contains insight from Intel on how it is demanding more from law firms to facilitate diversity in the legal profession, an exploration of the most effective approach to lobbying on trademark-related issues, guidance for trademark practice leaders to ensure that they have a considered wellbeing strategy in place, litigation tips, a roundtable discussion on brand creation and protection, and much more.

Subscribers will receive their hard copy issues shortly. In the meantime, the Spring 2020 issue of WTR is available online here.
