South Africa is by far the most mature and sophisticated market in sub-Saharan Africa. Unsurprisingly, this prosperous business environment has enabled a variety of IP practices to thrive. These outfits are divided into clear strata. Adams & Adams and Spoor & Fisher continue to tower over the competition, with their formidable profiles and peerless ability capturing most of the biggest clients. Chasing these two titans are several smaller but highly specialised boutiques, as well as a collection of larger commercial firms that have established robust IP practices as part of a wider corporate offering.
Brian Wimpey recently joined Norton Rose following its merger with Deneys Reitz and now heads the former’s IP unit. During his career he has acted for household names including Google and GlaxoSmithKline in litigation and enforcement matters. He has also represented numerous clients before the Supreme Court of Appeal and the registrar of trademarks, and is recognised for his experience in trademark filing and availability searches.
