Following EU accession, the Romanian government is taking intellectual property more seriously and the market is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Significant legislative amendments in 2010 have introduced expedited registration procedures and stronger protection against counterfeiting, among other things. Counterfeiting is still an issue for domestic brand owners; however, there is a high degree of cooperation between rights holders, customs authorities and the police. Thanks to the wider protection afforded by the new legislation, these groups have an effective tool at their disposal in the fight against counterfeiting. As the IP industry has matured, a small number of outstanding trademark specialists have emerged, winning recognition here.
