BEST Rechtsanwälte is a boutique firm which specialises in IP law. The firm was founded in 1998.
The firm’s partners and its other attorneys have strong and diverse backgrounds in IP law as in-house attorneys, working for the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM; now the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)) and in different law firms. They are supported by highly trained and motivated paralegals and other staff.
Dr Best studied law in Mainz, Germany and Dijon, France. He became a scientific assistant at the University of Mainz and obtained a PhD with an IP-related thesis. As deputy head of the trademark department of Hoechst AG – later Hoechst Marion Roussel – Dr Best was responsible for the group’s global portfolio of trademarks, designs and other non-technical IP rights for many years before founding the firm.
In January 2009 Mr Pfleghar joined the firm as a new partner. He studied in Melbourne, Australia and Regensburg, Germany. From an IP boutique in Munich, he went to OHIM in Spain in 1999 and moved on to Boehringer Ingelheim as head of the trademark and domain law group in 2004. He is a lecturer in law at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and a panellist for ‘.eu’ alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
Miléa Giannakoulis and Steffen Schäffner were appointed as further partners recently. Since its foundation, the firm has focused exclusively on trademarks, designs, domains, unfair competition and copyright, to provide the best possible service to clients in its areas of specialisation and expertise. The firm’s client base extends across numerous sectors of industry and commerce to include pharmaceutical, veterinary and chemical companies, power and automotive companies, cosmetics and fashion labels, finance institutions and hotels, as well as small to medium-sized enterprises.
BEST Rechtsanwälte also acts on behalf of a considerable number of law firms based outside Germany and Europe, which entrust it with the representation of their clients before the German and European courts, the German Patent and Trademark Office and the EUIPO.
The firm’s services for clients’ trademark and design portfolios include everything from searches, prosecution and defence to opposition proceedings, litigation, customs procedures, drafting and negotiation of licence agreements, assignments and transfers, coexistence agreements and watching.
One of the specialties of BEST Rechtsanwälte has always been the handling of large assignment and name change recordals, as well as worldwide filing projects for clients.
BEST Rechtsanwälte’s litigation practice includes all IP matters in Germany before the ordinary courts and the Federal Patent Court; its attorneys also have extensive experience in representing clients before the EUIPO and the European courts.
Counselling and representing clients in domain name, copyright and data protection matters are additional fields of specialisation.
BEST Rechtsanwälte always adapts to clients’ needs and requests. Use of the Internet and emails in advertising has meant that data protection issues have become increasingly important. In recent years, BEST Rechtsanwälte has responded to this demand and has added this area to its fields of expertise in order to satisfy clients’ demands.
The firm calls on the extensive experience that its partners, other attorneys (both in-house and as external counsel for their clients) and supporting staff have gained over the course of their careers, to offer high-quality and cost-effective solutions.
