Robert W Smith is a partner in McCarter & English’s IP group, with over 25 years’ experience in counselling clients. He manages worldwide trademark registration portfolios and conducts trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings in the US Patent and Trademark Office, as well as trademark, trade secret, unfair competition and copyright infringement litigation.

He regularly counsels clients concerning due diligence and other IP issues arising in the course of corporate acquisition/divestiture and financing transactions, and concerning their worldwide trademark registration strategies.

Mr Smith earned his JD cum laude from Seton Hall University School of Law and his BA from Rutgers University. He is active in the International Trademark Association (INTA), most recently serving on its Free Trade Areas Sub-committee, which gathers information on and coordinates with INTA to communicate with legislators abroad to ensure that free trade legislation and treaties as adopted include appropriate trademark and other IP protection.

Mr Smith has appeared as a guest lecturer on trademark, copyright and patent law at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s graduate school of business. He is one of Chamber USA’s Leaders in their Field for 2011 and 2012, and has been ranked in the World Trademark Review 1000 as a Leading Trademark Professional for 2012 and 2013.

He is admitted in New Jersey and before the US District Court, the Southern District of New York and the US Court of Appeals, Third and Federal Circuits.
