After studying physics at university, Tom Lingard trained and worked at a leading City IP practice before joining Stevens & Bolton LLP in 2007. He became a partner in 2011 and is a qualified solicitor advocate.
Mr Lingard advises on all aspects of IP and technology law. He has extensive litigation experience, having represented clients in proceedings before all levels of the UK courts, and regularly advises established businesses, start-ups and individuals in a range of sectors on the protection, exploitation and management of intellectual property and technology. He also advises clients, particularly those in the media sector, on defamation and reputation management.
Recent highlights include advising Brighton & Hove Albion FC on trademark infringement issues and a leading global fashion brand in relation to several trademark issues, including a dispute with a luxury swimwear manufacturer.
Mr Lingard is listed as a leading IP partner in the Chambers UK legal directory, in which he is described by clients as "amazing, efficient and proactive". They also state that “he has a great knowledge, explains issues in simple terms and sees the commercial reality".
Mr Lingard has written articles for numerous legal and industry publications, including Practical Law, Legal Week, Techradar and Music Week, as well as being quoted several times in the national press and by the BBC. He also recently appeared on Channel 4. He is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, a member of the Intellectual Property Lawyers Organisation, the Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and iTechLaw.
