John C Blattner is a member in Dickinson Wright’s Ann Arbor, Michigan office. He practises brand creation and protection law, including trademark counselling, clearance, registration and enforcement. His pre-legal career in publishing, marketing and non-profit development enables him to bring real-world business experience into his practice, which includes US clients doing business abroad as well as global clients doing business in the United States. Mr Blattner also assists clients with copyright, internet, licensing, First Amendment and antitrust matters. His experience in IP enforcement includes trademark, copyright, patent and antitrust litigation in state and federal courts; appellate litigation in state and federal courts of appeals, including the Federal Circuit; and opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Mr Blattner is the publisher of the Brandmarking e-newsletter on the creation, protection and enforcement of brand identity. Mr Blattner serves as adjunct professor at the Michigan State University College of Law, where he teaches trademarks and unfair competition. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America and was named Ann Arbor Lawyer of the Year - Trademark Law for 2018 by Best Lawyers in America. Mr Blattner received his BA from the University of Michigan, his MA from the American University and his JD from the University of Michigan Law School.
