Catherine Wiseman has extensive expertise advising clients in a wide range of trademark matters. She is particularly experienced with regards to the freedom to use and registrability of trademarks, as well as filing and prosecuting trademark applications around the world – in particular UK, EU and international applications. Ms Wiseman is well versed in conflict matters and in the negotiation of settlements.
Ms Wiseman acts for domestic and overseas clients, including large national and multinational companies, providing commercial and pragmatic advice and often acting as an as integral part of clients' in-house teams.
She has dealt with all types of trademark issues, including searching, filing and prosecution of applications; portfolio reviews and management; assignment and licensing programmes; hearings at the UK Intellectual Property Office; and contentious matters such as infringement of trademark rights, counterfeiting, company name objections, oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions.
Ms Wiseman has been named a world-leading trademark professional in the WTR 1000 for the past three years. The WTR 1000 2014 praised her as “an excellent and commercially focused trademark attorney. The multilingual partner also handles conflicts and negotiations with a light yet effective touch”. The WTR 1000 2015 said that "the ‘energetic’ Catherine Wiseman ‘conveys commercially nuanced and pragmatic advice. She is unstuffy and happy to get on with things, while taking the time to explain the costs, timings and risk of any actio’". She has also been named an IP Star for three consecutive years in Managing Intellectual Property’s World IP Survey.
Ms Wiseman joined Barker Brettell in 1996 and became partner in 2001. After graduating from the University of Birmingham with an honours degree (2:1) in law, she completed the Legal Practice Course (diploma) for solicitors, specialising in business law and commercial civil litigation. She was awarded the Peter Fitzgibbon Memorial award for achieving the highest mark in the country for one of her professional examinations.
