Charmayne Ong Poh Yin was admitted as a partner of Skrine in 1996. She is a registered patent agent, design agent and trademark agent in Malaysia. She is a partner in Skrine’s IP division and is in charge of both the trademark registration practice group and the IT and e-commerce practice group.

Ms Ong’s areas of practice include managing the registration of trademarks and general advisory work relating to the classic forms of IP rights: trademarks, copyrights, industrial design rights and patents. Her experience involves advising on and drafting contracts in intellectual property (eg, licensing, franchising, distributorships, contract manufacturing and technology transfers). She is also familiar with IT and ecommerce matters, having been involved in matters relating to e-commerce, internet banking, cyberlaws, communications and multimedia.

Ms Ong was nominated as one of AsiaLaw’s Leading Lawyers 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012; was listed as a leading individual in Asia Pacific Legal 500 for information technology and telecommunications in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012; and was also listed as a leading individual in intellectual property in Chambers Asia 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Her recent work includes acting for a leading foreign IT service provider for an IT outsourcing project that involved the provision of IT products (including hardware and software) and services to the IT subsidiary of an established local bank. The scope of work included the review, drafting and negotiation of the IT outsourcing agreement and other IT-related agreements. She has also acted for a prominent Islamic insurance operator in Malaysia in reviewing, drafting and advising on an IT infrastructure operations management services agreement with a leading IT service provider. This transaction involved the outsourcing of the management of the insurance operator’s IT systems.
