Uğur Aktekin co-chairs Gün + Partners’ IP practice group, which is internationally recognised as a leading practice in Turkey. Mr Aktekin specialises in advising on trademark, design, copyright, IT, unfair competition, advertising and media law. He advises local and multinational companies on establishing and maintaining strategies for trademark prosecution, opposition, enforcement and litigation.

Mr Aktekin has handled and supervised hundreds of contentious and non-contentious matters, administrative oppositions and litigations involving trademarks, copyright and industrial designs. He provides counsel on legal issues in relation to the administration of trademark portfolios for various national and multinational companies, and represents clients in relation to domain name disputes.

Mr Aktekin’s practice has been recognised by many independent guides to the legal profession, including the WTR 1000, the Legal 500, Chambers and Partners, Who’s Who Legal, Euromoney’s Expert Guides, and Best Lawyers. Mr Aktekin has written several articles and given several presentations relating to trademark law in Turkey and abroad.

His recent speaking engagements include:

  • guest lecturer of master’s students at Istanbul Bilgi University in March and April 2016, on trademark, patent, technology and licensing subjects.
  • “Foreign Words as Trademarks” – presentation and moderation at the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys’ Open Forum, Barcelona, November 5-8, 2014;
  • “Combating Against Lookalikes in Turkey” – presentation at the INTA Annual Meeting, Dallas, May 8 2013; and
  • “Anatomy of an Anti-counterfeiting Action in Turkey” – presentation at the International Trademark Association (INTA) Advanced Anti-counterfeiting Strategies Conference, Istanbul, December 4 2012.

His recent publications include:

  • Trade Secret Protection, co-author, Turkey chapter, Globe Law and Business, January 2016.
  • “Better protection for genuine right owners against trademark squatters: compensation for damages for bad faith”, co-author, Oxford Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice, April 2014; and
