International - WTR Industry Awards 2014: the shortlisted trademark teams and individuals revealed

By Trevor Little
April 23 2014

World Trademark Review is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2014 WTR Industry Awards. Amongst the in-house teams featured on the shortlist are those from Amazon.com, Apple, BMW, Campbell Soup Company, China Mobile, GlaxoSmithKline, Google, Lego, Pepsico, Rovio Entertainment, Unify and Zippo Manufacturing Company.

The nominees for in-house counsel of the year - one of two individual awards to be presented - are SanDisk Corp’s Michelle Ravn Appelqvist, Joseph R (Casey) Mangan Jr of Allstate Insurance Company Kathryn Barrett Park from General Electric, Phillips 66’s Craig Stone and Jerry Xia of Honeywell International.

The winners will be announced at the WTR Industry Awards ceremony, which will be held on Tuesday May 13 at the historic Hong Kong Jockey Club. While the winners will not be announced until the evening of the event (when they will be posted on World Trademark Review’s Twitter feed as they are announced), there is one exception. For his outstanding contribution to trademark practice over a career that has spanned almost 60 years, Miles Alexander will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alexander has helped to shape the US trademark landscape, participating in the Trademark Review Commission which drafted the landmark 1989 Lanham Act revisions and serving on the committee that prepared the 1995 Restatement of Unfair Competition. He has also served as chairman of the Trademark Public Advisory Committee to the US Patent and Trademark Office and is a member of the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution and INTA’s Panel of Distinguished Neutrals.

The World Trademark Review Industry Awards are designed to recognise the vital work performed by in-house trademark counsel, and to identify those teams and individuals that are performing their functions to the highest possible standards. The list of nominees is the result of two months of extensive research. During that time, World Trademark Review surveyed its readers and selected members of the global trademark community for nominations. The World Trademark Review team analysed the recommendations, supplemented by its own extensive knowledge base, to draw up detailed shortlists featuring a number of outstanding candidates in each category.
