Since their launch in the early 2000s, social networks have become truly ubiquitous. Today, Facebook has 1.9 billion monthly active users, accounting for nearly one-third of the global population. While that figure is far and away the highest of all the social platforms, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, Google+, Snapchat and Twitter also pull in more than 100 million users a month.
