Fashion, Cosmetics & Luxury Goods Team of the Year: Maus Frères

The Maus Frères team celebrated a number of wins in 2016, as it worked hard to protect powerhouse brands such as Lacoste, Aigle and Gant. Notable was the securing of well-known status for Lacoste’s crocodile mark in both the European Union and China, although IP director Zeeger Vink argues that such protection should be the norm rather than the exception: “Well-known status is a formidably powerful tool in the trademark box, so we are happy to have it confirmed in these important territories. At the same time, there are other countries that still apply unnecessary strict or burdensome criteria, despite their obligations under Article 6bis of the Paris Convention. With the steadily ongoing globalisation of trademarks, it would be good to see an alignment of international norms in this respect.”
