World Trademark Review is pleased to reveal the shortlist for the 2017 WTR Industry Awards. Among the corporate teams featured on this year’s shortlist are those from adidas, Caesars Entertainment, Expedia, GlaxoSmithKline, Google, Intel, Maus Frères, Netflix, PepsiCo, Sky International, The National Association of Realtors, Twitter and Wyndham Worldwide.

The list of nominees is the result of four months of extensive research, with World Trademark Review surveying the global trademark community for nominations across key industry categories. The shortlist has been selected on the basis of a wide range of criteria relating to excellence, such as active prosecution and/or enforcement of trademarks in the relevant jurisdiction or field of industry; successful portfolio exploitation and rationalisation; strong industry/regional expertise; determination and diligence to ensure efficient cooperation with outside counsel; global attitude towards brand expansion and protection; and quality of internal organisation and in-house processes.

In addition to the team-focused accolades, two individual awards are included among the list of categories. The nominees for one of these, In-house Counsel of the Year, are Antony Douglass of Specsavers, Marriott International’s Elisabeth Escobar,  J Scott Evans of Adobe Systems, Christopher George from Intel and BMW’s Jochen Volkmer.

The winner of that award, and the team-based categories, will be announced at a private champagne reception in Barcelona next month. However, there is one award winner that can be unveiled today. The recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement award is Anne Gundelfinger. Currently vice president, global intellectual property at Swarovski AG in Switzerland, Gundelfinger has an extensive in-house background, having built and managed the trademark function at Sun Microsystems, before doing the same at Intel Corporation. A past president of the International Trademark Association, she has also served as chair of the Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights and was one of the authors of the US Trademark Dilution Revision Act, 2006.
